Another crappy day...
4th-Mar-2010 04:08 pm
I had an appointment with the employment counsellor today and...I don't qualify for retraining assistance. Well, that sucks mightily.
It seems that because I'm in IT, it is considered a good employment market, so no help is required. But...the problem is that old fogies like me have been in this industry so long that my skillset (mainly for mainframe and Cobol) is outdated. We are a dying breed. We are in a sector of the industry that is disappearing. We do need either upgrading or retraining.
The counsellor understood that but she can't make a case for me to the government because the blind bureaucrats only recognize the computer industry as a whole and their experts tell them, it is one that should recover. ^$%&*^

My only option is to pay for training myself...thanks a lot...everyone else gets help but just not me.

So, I'm back now making myself feel better by making Avon pics and rewriting more of B7.

I'm in pretty much the same position, though I know that's no help, especially from me right now. I used a 4GL that's no longer used here and companies aren't willing to train. All my other language went out ages ago, and I'm not even sure I can claim to remember enough COBOL from my starting-off days to try to get a job in that (thought it wouldn't take long to pick up again). There are still legacy systems needing it, but I'm sure there are people with more experience in it ahead of me.

However I've been considering downloading and learning Ruby and being a volunteer coder on AO3; they need coders and apparently Ruby is fairly easy to pick up, and might be useful in the job market. I've certainly seen it mentioned in on-line job ads (but usually with other things). Would you be interested in that?

Yeah, it sucks. Ruby sounds a possibility. I'll look into it. Thanks.
