Hmm, I think I'll do a fic where Blake is finally made to pay for all the evil things he did in the name of being good and the self-serving things he did.

And maybe one where Vila finally has to face the music for betraying everyone in Hostage and trying to dump Avon, Cally and Blake at Star One and Tarrant later, all just to save his own neck. I wonder if that went through Avon's mind in Orbit.

There are far too many fics where Avon is made to pay for his sins. You almost get the idea that he was the only one who did anything bad and the others were all his victims.

Well it's time to have a little parity. Just fair warning. If you don't feel like reading then don't. I'm going to write them anyway.

I think they grew up in such a dog-eat-dog society, they were naturally selfish and suspicious of others, putting themselves first.

Yes, that is how I view it too. They live in a survival culture. It's very similar to what I saw in India when I worked there.

I actually don't consider either one of them that selfish. They were trying to survive in a hostile environment. For me, strong survival instinct does not equal selfish. They both acted against their survival instincts a lot of the times when they risked their own lives to help others. For me, it makes Avon and Vila far nobler when they do that. They saw the danger far clearer than any of the others. So it takes more courage for them to act.

Both Vila and Avon were not opposed to fighing the Federation or to helping people. Like the rest of the crew. But not one of them were willing to die for it. Or to take unacceptable risks.

For me that isn't selfish. They are already good enough to want to help and fight. That makes them human and I can identify with Avon and Vila and respect them for that.
