Hmm, I think I'll do a fic where Blake is finally made to pay for all the evil things he did in the name of being good and the self-serving things he did.

And maybe one where Vila finally has to face the music for betraying everyone in Hostage and trying to dump Avon, Cally and Blake at Star One and Tarrant later, all just to save his own neck. I wonder if that went through Avon's mind in Orbit.

There are far too many fics where Avon is made to pay for his sins. You almost get the idea that he was the only one who did anything bad and the others were all his victims.

Well it's time to have a little parity. Just fair warning. If you don't feel like reading then don't. I'm going to write them anyway.

Do you really think so? Avon is far and away the favorite character in Blake's Seven.

Favourite and having lot of fics, does not mean having lots of fics that portray him fairly and evenly. It seems in most fics of Avon, he's made to pay for all his sins and for being so bad to the rest of the crew. Or how the poor crew had to suffer under Avon's tongue lashings and its so unfair because none of them did anything to him. Or how Avon never admitted that he cared about people. Or how he's such a scrooge and blindly critical person that he puts everyone down at all times. I don't call that parity because Avon wasn't like that a lot of the times. Only sometimes but for some reason that is all that people remember about him, so they portray him solely like that. Probably because he was witty when he was being like that.

I've dropped in scenes and dialogues straight from the series where Avon isn't like that, just to see if anyone makes comments about how it sounds so much like Avon and guess what? Not a peep. I found it highly amusing.

Or the majority of the fics that portray Blake as a saint who is smart, successful, fair and treated people with consideration and care and was completely moral and not selfish at all. Or how the crew loved him and did things willingly for him. Those ones make me ill. Blake was only sometimes like that. I've also dropped in scenes and dialogues when Blake was not and no one remarks how accurate a portrayal of Blake it is.

So yes, I am seeking parity in terms of portrayal, not number of fics or how popular a character is.

One of the minor reasons that I left fandom the first time was that I was sick and tired of Avon's mouth. Of course, that means the writer's idea of his mouth. I was glad when I got re-addicted that authors were no longer doing that so much to him.
Was it you who had a lovely essay, detailing from the series, that Avon only bit back when another bit him first, i.e., Avon only counter-attacked?

Yes, I did write an essay like that. I tracked each instance of when Avon said something negative and when someone said something negative to him or bullied him. I found that in every instance, it was never Avon who started a negative relationship with someone. But the moment you attacked Avon, from then on he became very defensive and the walls came up. If you left Avon alone, he'd be fairly decent to you or at least, he wouldn't be negative or offensive. After the despicable ways Blake and Vila treated Avon in Spacefall, I don't blame him at all for his extremely negative attitude towards them after that. They deserved every thing he said to them after that. If they had done the same things to me that they had done to Avon in Spacefall, I would have been even more scathing and not been as nice about it as Avon was.
