Frustration!!!

Why why why??? I've done it again. I've managed to wipe out an entire chapter that I finished yesterday by overwriting one file with another!!! I had so much fun with it. It was supposed to be really funny...sobs. Grrrr

I'm always worried about that, so I use different directories for different versions AND give different file names so instead of having several "Chapter 5"s I have "C5" or "CC5" or "Chap5".

That's a good idea. I guess my way just isn't perfected yet and as in this case, I got lazy.

I normally have the entire story in one file, separated by chapter headings. Whenever I know that I'll be making some major changes or additions, I make a copy of the file and append a timestamp to it.

My biggest culprit is that between work and home, I have two computers and a laptop and I try to keep them synched whenever I switch from one to another. Plus a flash drive that I use for transferring files. Perhaps just a few too many.

That sounds like a version control nightmare! But makes it even more imperative to have file names that clearly differentiate which version you're using across multiple devices.

(I write non-fiction books for a living, and last year I was proofreading when I found out that the typesetter set the *unrevised* versions of five chapters instead of the *revised* versions. The publishers and I have different ideas about just whose fault THAT was.

Yes, I definitely hear you there. I must figure out a much better, and more foolproof, way of keeping track. After the umpteenth frustrating time of making this mistake, I should do something.
