What's in a name....
17th-Jun-2008 12:41 pm
In an attempt to get to know my flist better...

I've always been curious about some of the user names which people chose and I've finally decided to do something about it. Drop by, put up your feet and tell me how you decided on your LJ user name.

The origin of kalinda001:

This name comes from my (much much younger) school days. At one point I did some fiction writing and created a character named Kalinda; who wasn't connected to any fandom (I was young and naive in those days and had never even heard of fanfic).

As is invariably the case, when I decided to use it as my penname, I discovered that other people were already using it; and many variations thereof. Tacking on the '001' seemed to work on most sites.

When I decided to establish an on-line presence Youngest was operating as Girlreaper so somehow Reapermum seemed to follow.

The only other thing you need to know is that my surname is Death (yes, that is how you spell it) pronounced to rhyme with Heath.

Like the one Wimsey uses as his alias in Murder Must Advertise...

Oh, I'm obvious. Years and years before LJ I'd coined the term 'Entropy House' for my house. At one point for literally months on end *something* went wrong, broke down or needed repair *EVERY* single day. We (my mother and brother and I) would get up in the morning and instead of saying 'Good morning' would say 'I wonder what's going to break today'.

I hope that one day, it will just be a name which brings back memories rather than a description of where you live.

You weren't tempted to be 007 ... and end up the other 1/2 of James Bond, then?

I am sure you know where my name comes from - but if not :-

Debris is a real nick-name given to me by the conductor of orchestra. he heard me correcting someone who had called me Debbie (to Deborah) and said that it was silly - as it was obvious that I should be Debris ... as I am so accident-prone

And 4 Spike ... well ... look at him. Avon may have been my first love - but Spike is true love!!

I could guess about the 4Spike...didn't know about the other half.

Do they still use that nickname in the orchestra?

When I started writing B7 fic, there was a Predatrix and a Belatrix Carter so I figured that "trix" suffixes were fashionable. I was working on a book with an estate planning chapter, so Executrix sounded like a good choice.

That's pretty much what I'd assumed.

Bantam as in The Bantams, nickname of Bradford City Football Club..my home town team and where I am a long standing season ticket holder. King was because all the variations I picked to start with were taken so in a huff I stuffed in king and it worked and thus it stuck :)

Thanks for sharing that. It is a pain when other people have already used the ones you want to. But you ended up with a good one at least.

Mine is very plain - my name and two initials :)

But you make up for it with icons.

My choice was really a play on words. If you have read Anne McCaffrey's Pern books then Jaxom's dragon was Ruth. As that is my first name and my surname matches his colour the choice was obvious!

I love Ruth the white dragon.

I've always loved seashells and the nautilus is for me the most beautiful. The one in my icon is a souvenir of an island holiday some years ago. I've used the French version 'nautile' as it sounds more like a name. And 26, well yes of course 'Nautile' was already taken. 26 is part of the address of the beach house where I spend my Christmas holidays.

That's a beautiful shell.

My name's too obvious to explain. I ended up with it because all my names and nicknames were taken and no one uses this.

Nice one. Fits perfectly.

Well, my lovely name was given to me by a person who shall remain nameless--let's just say, it started out as psychobrat. The ultra was added for those special moments.
